In the words of Aristotle, "What we have to learn to do, we learn by doing." His wisdom underscores the power of experiential learning, where true understanding is gained from applying knowledge in real-world contexts. At Thunderbird School of Global Management, we embody this philosophy in many ways, one of them being our Global Challenge Labs (GCL) – a unique, immersive capstone project that bridges classroom theory with practical application.

The GCL program is a cornerstone of the Thunderbird experience, immersing Master of Global Management students in hands-on professional projects that hone their skills and prepare them for global leadership. Student teams act as international consultants, working full-time for several weeks under Thunderbird faculty guidance to solve complex business challenges for real clients. Since its inception, GCL has partnered with over 200 organizations across more than 30 countries, often hosted by Thunderbird alums who share a commitment to fostering a global mindset. This unique opportunity allows students to apply their academic knowledge, immerse themselves in diverse cultural and professional settings, and drive meaningful impact.

Shaping global leaders through hands-on experience

The value of hands-on professional experience in GCL cannot be overstated. By addressing real business challenges, students hone critical problem-solving skills and build confidence in dynamic global settings. “Looking back, the most rewarding part of GCL wasn’t just the work, it was the transformation,” shared Cameron Berggren ’26. “It challenged my mindset, tested my ability to navigate ambiguity, and expanded what I thought I was capable of in a global setting.”

By tackling real challenges and projects for real clients, students cultivate cross-cultural collaboration, gain exposure to diverse industries, and apply what they’ve learned in the classroom. It’s an opportunity to put their adaptive leadership skills to the test. Moreover, the program builds resilience and fosters a growth-oriented mindset by encouraging students to embrace uncertainty, innovate under pressure, and develop practical solutions that translate directly to professional success. The goal is to prepare students to be successful after graduation – all the while, helping clients solve business challenges. It's a win-win.

Strategic impact for organizations

The GCL’s impact extends to the organizations they serve. Companies, ranging from startups to global enterprises, benefit from the fresh perspectives and skills that Thunderbird students bring. “Our company was at a pivotal moment, facing fierce competition,” said Kefei Wang ’13, global partner strategy manager at TTI Success Insights. “Our GCL team delivered a strategic roadmap for expanding our revenue streams into untapped global markets, offering innovative ideas and a fresh perspective that reinvigorated our approach.” Similarly, Jeff Hillam ’13, chief executive officer  of Red House Teams,, praised his students’ dedication: “GCL students don’t just show up – they dive in and work hard, delivering real value.”

Building global connections

In times of challenge and uncertainty – something we face in every era – Thunderbird’s expansive global network prevails. “Anywhere I am in the world, I know someone from Thunderbird will be there,” said Hillam. And beyond benefiting organizations and students, the GCL program strengthens this robust network, connecting students and alums around the globe. “Thunderbird is my tribe,” continued Hillam. “As an alum, I feel a responsibility to engage with the school and help build a network of global leaders worldwide.” Alum hosts like Odie Moelia ’01, principal partner, Singapore based  Enercon Asia Pte Ltd, amplify this impact by facilitating connections. “I’ve hosted GCLs in Malaysia, Singapore, and Jakarta,” Moelia shared. “In each location, I connect students with other alums to spark networking opportunities, fostering relationships that endure beyond the program and will hopefully help students be successful.”

GCL complements the Thunderbird curriculum, preparing students to lead with confidence and cultural fluency. The program’s real-world engagements not only refine technical and leadership skills but also build a robust professional network critical for long-term career success. Students emerge with a deeper understanding of global business dynamics, practical experience in solving real challenges, and lifelong connections within Thunderbird’s global community.

Organizations face ever-evolving challenges and opportunities. GCL empowers students to make an immediate impact while cultivating the skills and mindset needed for lifelong leadership. This powerful reflection of Thunderbird’s global ethos and commitment to experiential learning enables students, alums, and clients to thrive.
